Matchup phases
We split the game into three stages. Each has a concrete action plan.
| Lane | The lane is neutral, the mid-game decides everything. Do not gift extra kills to the opponent. |
| Mid-game | In 5v5 fights the enemy catches us first. Without BKB any cast = death. Keep Linken's or a save position. |
| Late | The opponent reliably delivers control from the back line. Grab save items. |
The main task is to convert the early lead into tempo. Every small advantage accumulates by minute 15 into a tangible GPM gap.
Items against Lion
These items reduce losses in the matchup. The first save item — before minute 18.
- Black King Bar — magic immunity for 5–9 seconds — a mandatory item.
- Eternal Shroud — magic resist + HP regen from magic damage taken.
- Linken's Sphere — blocks the first targeted cast (Hex, Doom).
The Item Auto-Use module automates the cast on an incoming-spell trigger — 0.1 sec reaction vs a human's 0.25.
Umbrella scripts
Software help from the Umbrella subscription closes Skywrath Mage's weak spots in this matchup:
- Dodger — Dodger predicts the opponent's cast and buys time for BKB / Force.
- Info Screen — Info Screen shows the opponent's approach through the fog.
FAQ
Where does the -5.3% gap come from?
The OpenDota live feed — the public Dota 2 statistics API. The gap is calculated over millions of ranked games at high MMR. At low ranks the effect is weaker.
Can you win this matchup?
Yes. -5.3% is statistics over a sample, not a verdict. With BKB / Linken's we play out in 40–45% of cases.
Will Umbrella help?
