Definition and logic
A counter-pick in Dota 2 is a hero with a natural mechanical advantage against another hero. The advantage is expressed as the win rate difference across millions of matches.
Example: Anti-Mage vs Medusa. AM dismantles Medusa's Mana Shield through Mana Break and Mana Void, giving him a win rate of around 58% against Medusa (versus a baseline 47% overall).
Matchup databases are maintained on OpenDota / Dotabuff and updated daily from tournament feeds and regular ranked games.
How to read the matchup table
On any hero's page on OpenDota there is a "Matchups" tab. You see three columns:
- Hero — the opponent's name.
- Disadvantage — win rate difference (positive = the opponent loses more).
- Win Rate — the absolute win rate in this pairing.
Sort by Disadvantage descending — the top 10 counter-picks to your hero in the current meta. At the bottom of the list are the heroes hardest to play against.
Full overview of all 126 heroes with matchups — in the hero scripts catalog. Each page has a "Counter-picks" section showing the top 5 for both sides.
Types of counter-picks
- Hard counter (>5% difference). For example, Bristleback vs Phantom Assassin: BB ignores crit strikes through armor stacking. Best to avoid a straight lane against this.
- Soft counter (2–5%). Slardar vs Nyx Assassin: Amplify Damage strips Carapace. Has an impact, but not critical.
- Situational counter. Pugna vs Wraith King: Decrepify before Reincarnation cancels the ult. Works only with correct timing.
- Item counter. Lotus Orb vs Lion: reflects Hex and Finger. This is not a pick counter but an item counter.
- Style counter. Late-game carry loses to a push strategy before the 25-minute mark.
Applying it in the ranked draft
- Ban the enemy. If Anti-Mage is already in their lineup — ban Medusa to deny AM an easy late-game matchup.
- Last-pick counter. Wait for their 5th pick, then take a hard counter as your 5th — the opponent cannot respond.
- Counter the team style. Enemy picked three carries — take push heroes (Lycan, Death Prophet) to win before their 6 cores come online.
- Avoid bad matchups on support. If you are pos-5 and the enemy took Sven — do not pick Crystal Maiden; she loses to melee aggression. Take Disruptor instead.
Tip: do not fixate on a single counter-pick. A team of five counters with no synergy will lose to a team with a weaker draft but synergistic composition.

FAQ
How important are counter-picks at low ranks (Herald–Crusader)?
Less important than in Divine. At low ranks mechanics and game understanding matter more. A hard counter only outweighs a skill gap when the teams are evenly matched.
Can you win in a bad matchup?
Yes. A counter-pick is statistics, not a death sentence. Correct pos-2 farming, aggressive pos-4 play, and smart rotations can overcome a −5% win rate.
Does a pick item count as a counter?
That is an item counter, not a pick counter. Lotus Orb, Black King Bar, Manta — mid-game reactions to the enemy lineup. A pick counter is chosen in the draft, before the match begins.
Do counter-picks depend on the current meta?
Yes. After major Valve patches stats and abilities change — matchups can flip. Check the data after every major patch (e.g. after 7.39).
