MATCHUP · AXE VS OGRE MAGI

Axe vs Ogre Magi

Ogre Magi (melee, STR) hard-counters Axe (melee, STR). The win-rate gap from OpenDota is about -7.9%. Over a large sample this means that in a random ranked match at equal skill the opponent wins slightly more often. We break down the lane phase, mid-game and late game, which items to buy in this matchup, and which Umbrella modules automate saving and counter-casting.

Matchup phases

The matchup breaks into three stages. At each one our pick plays its own strategy — without it the -7.9% gap turns into a lost match.

LaneThe enemy clamps down the farm phase — every approach to a creep becomes a risk of getting caught by a cast. Carry sentries, play under your support's protection.
Mid-gameIn 5v5 fights the enemy targets Axe first — without BKB any nuke / hex / hook turns into a death. Keep Linken's or a save-oriented position.
LateLate game is a balance of resources. With a standard build we lose, because the opponent has a ready answer. Swap the 4th slot for a situational item (Manta / BKB / Linken).

The main task is to not let the opponent get a key item timer. Any extra death on the lane = 1500 gold for the enemy = a 3–4 minute speedup of their pick.

Items against Ogre Magi

These items statistically reduce losses in the matchup. Buy them in priority order — the first save item should be in the inventory before 18 minutes.

  • Black King Bar — magic immunity for 5–9 seconds — a mandatory item against any Ogre Magi draft.
  • Eternal Shroud — magic resist + HP regen from magic damage taken.
  • Pipe of Insight — a team barrier that absorbs the first AoE nuke.
  • Linken's Sphere — blocks the first targeted cast (Hex, Doom, Hook).
i

The Item Auto-Use module automates the cast on an incoming-spell trigger — a 0.1 second reaction versus a human's 0.25.

Umbrella scripts

Not items, but software help. These modules from the Umbrella subscription close Axe's weak spots in this matchup:

  • Dodger — Dodger predicts the opponent's cast (Hook / Doom / Skewer) from the pre-cast animation and buys time for BKB / Force.
  • Item Auto-Use — Item Auto-Use automatically triggers Ghost / Glimmer / BKB on an incoming cast from the enemy.
  • Info Screen — Info Screen draws the opponent's approach through the fog — you have time to prepare for initiation.
  • Last-Hit Helper — Last-Hit Helper stabilizes the lane farm phase against harass, even when harass disrupts the attack animation.

Draft advice

If the opponent is banned or first-picked — Axe can be picked safely. If the enemy comes as a last-pick counter to your lineup, you have three options:

  1. Swap to a hero with a better matchup against the opponent (see Ogre Magi counters).
  2. Pick up a save support to pair with — Oracle / Dazzle / Abaddon relieve lane pressure.
  3. Agree to play the matchup with the right build — see the items above.

The third option only works if you have 100+ ranked games of experience on this pick. At low ranks the first option is better.

FAQ

Where does the -7.9% matchup gap come from?

The OpenDota live feed — the public Dota 2 statistics API. The gap is calculated over millions of ranked games at high MMR (Ancient+). At low ranks the effect is weaker: skill gap matters more than the matchup.

Can you win this matchup?

Yes. -7.9% is statistics over a sample, not a verdict on a specific game. With BKB / Linken's and a smart build the pick plays out in 40–45% of cases.

Will Umbrella help?

The Umbrella subscription gives you Dodger (predicting the opponent's cast), Item Auto-Use (instant BKB / Glimmer) and Info Screen (you see the enemy through the fog). On hard matchups the difference is ~2–3% win rate in favor of the Umbrella user — more on melee carries, less on supports.

Where do I get auto-combo on Axe?

On the guide page — the "Umbrella scripts" section. A ready config with binds is in CFG.

What if the opponent is banned?

Then the matchup is irrelevant — play the standard build. If the enemies picked another hard counter (see Axe counters), come back to this page with a different opponent.
