What it is
Low priority is a temporary matchmaking restriction. The account keeps working, but games are found in a separate pool filled with other offenders. You cannot wait it out: the penalty lifts on wins only.
- Matches do not count. No rating change, no progress.
- The pool is other penalised players. Match quality is noticeably worse than usual.
- Only wins get you out. A loss does not count and has to be replayed.
How you get there
Three usual causes, all about behaviour rather than skill:
- Abandoning a match — leaving or being away too long, the most common one.
- Accumulated reports — confirmed complaints for sabotage, abuse or intentional feeding.
- Repeat offences — the more often it happens, the more wins the next penalty takes.
Your behaviour score drops alongside it, and that part lasts longer: the queue penalty clears in a few games, the score takes weeks.
How many wins it takes
The number is not fixed: a first offence takes the minimum, repeats take more, and the bar rises each time. One or two slips clear quickly; a habit of abandoning turns the exit into a long series.
The detail people miss: wins are counted. Playing the required number of games and losing them moves nothing. Play your usual role on a familiar hero instead of experimenting.
Low priority vs a chat ban
They arrive together often enough to be confused, but they are separate penalties with separate counters.
- Low priority — about in-game conduct: abandons, sabotage. Cleared by wins.
- Communication ban — about chat and voice. Cleared by time and clean games; wins are irrelevant.
Which gives one practical rule: if your chat is muted, playing silently with chat still enabled achieves nothing — remove the source of reports and turn voice and text off for the run.
How to get out faster
There is no way around low priority, only ways not to stretch it:
- Do not abandon inside the penalty — that adds a new one.
- Play a familiar role: the goal is the win, not the experiment.
- Turn voice and chat off so you do not stack reports on top.
- Get a party together — it raises the win rate where random matchmaking is weak.
A detailed walkthrough is in "How to leave low priority". If the account has sunk too far to be worth the hours, starting from a clean step makes more sense — see Dota 2 accounts with an open rank.
FAQ
What does low priority mean in Dota 2?
A temporary matchmaking restriction for rule breaking. Games run in a separate queue, do not affect rating, and the penalty only lifts through wins.
How many games do you need to win to leave low priority?
It depends on how many times you have been there: a first offence takes the minimum, repeats raise the bar. Wins are counted — a loss does not contribute.
Does low priority affect your MMR?
The matches themselves do not change rating. But the cause — abandons and reports — also lowers your behaviour score, and that does affect matchmaking in normal games.
Can you remove low priority by paying?
No. It clears only through wins. Any offer to "remove low priority for money" is either an account sale or a scam.
