How to Bypass Windows SmartScreen

SmartScreen blocks any EXE without an Extended Validation certificate, even from the Microsoft Store. It does not mean the file is a virus — it just means the developer didn't pay $400/year for an EV certificate. We break down how to safely skip the block.

Why SmartScreen blocks

Microsoft Defender checks every launched EXE against several parameters:

  • Whether the file is signed with an EV certificate ($400/year for a developer).
  • Whether the file is known to Microsoft's reputation database.
  • Whether there are suspicious signatures in the code.

Any program from an indie developer without an EV certificate gets the scary "Windows protected your PC" message. This does not mean it is a virus — it means Microsoft does not recognise the file.

Quick fix — Run anyway

  1. In the warning window click More info.
  2. A Run anyway button appears.
  3. Click it — the program launches.

This is the safest route: you allow the specific application while protection stays enabled for everything else. Windows will remember your choice for that utility.

Folder exclusion

If you run many small utilities from one directory:

  1. Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings.
  2. Exclusions → Add or remove exclusions → Add an exclusion → Folder.
  3. Specify the directory with the applications.

All executables inside will run without checks. Only use this for trusted directories — otherwise a real virus will slip through unnoticed.

Fully disabling the defender

Not recommended as a permanent change. Only for 5–10 minutes during installation:

  1. Windows Security → App & browser control → Reputation-based protection settings.
  2. Disable Check apps and files.
  3. Launch the program you need.
  4. Turn it back on immediately after installation.

A permanently disabled defender is a serious security hole. Real viruses exploit the same gap.

When NOT to bypass

  • The program was downloaded from a suspicious site (decorations in the URL, strange domains).
  • The name mimics a well-known application (e.g. chrome_setup_v2_REAL.exe).
  • The archive arrived via a direct message from a stranger.
  • A separate antivirus (not Microsoft Defender) also raises an alert.

To check a suspicious installer — use VirusTotal. Upload the installer and you will see a report from 60+ antivirus engines. If 1–2 engines flag it — usually a false positive. If 5+ flag it — real risk.

FAQ

The defender blocks Umbrella — is it a virus?

No. Umbrella Loader does not have a Microsoft EV certificate (like most private software). The installer has been checked by antivirus engines. Use "Run anyway" or temporarily disable the defender for installation.

Still blocked after Run anyway — what to do?

Restart your PC. Sometimes the reputation filter caches a wrong decision. Also check whether a separate antivirus is blocking it.

Can I sign my own application?

Yes, through services like Sectigo or DigiCert. An EV certificate costs $400+/year. Self-signed keys are ignored — Extended Validation is required.

Are the defender and an antivirus the same thing?

No. SmartScreen is a reputation-based Windows filter (whether the application is known). An antivirus does signature-based and behavioral scanning. An installer can pass the antivirus but fail the reputation check due to the absence of an EV certificate.
