1. Verify file integrity

Steam → right-click Dota 2 → Properties → Local Files → Verify integrity of game files. Restores corrupted or deleted files. Takes 5–15 minutes.

After the check, restart Steam and try launching the game.

2. Outdated video driver

Update your NVIDIA / AMD driver to the latest version. NVIDIA — via GeForce Experience or DDU + clean install. AMD — Adrenalin.

Restart your PC after updating. A black screen on startup is often caused by this.

3. Vulkan vs DirectX 11

Dota 2 supports both APIs. If Vulkan crashes on launch — switch to DX11:

Steam → right-click Dota 2 → Properties → Launch Options → enter -dx11 (for DirectX 11) or -vulkan (for Vulkan).

On newer NVIDIA cards (RTX 30/40) Vulkan is more stable. On older ones (GTX 1060–1080) — DX11.

4. Antivirus blocking

Kaspersky, Avast, Bitdefender may flag Dota 2 network traffic as suspicious. Fix:

  • Add the folder ...\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\ to your antivirus exclusions.
  • Disable real-time protection for 5 minutes and check whether Dota launches.
  • If it launches without the antivirus — it is definitely blocking it. Configure an exclusion.

5. Administrator rights

Launch Steam as administrator:

  1. Close Steam via the system tray (bottom-right corner).
  2. Right-click the Steam shortcut → Run as administrator.
  3. Launch Dota 2 as normal.

6. Not enough disk space

Dota 2 requires 50+ GB for installation and another 5–10 GB free for cache. Check free space on your system drive.

To move the game to another drive: Steam → Settings → Storage → select a new drive → Move.

7. Custom CFG conflict

A broken autoexec.cfg or launch options can block startup:

Delete (or rename) the files:

  • ...\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg\autoexec.cfg
  • ...\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg\config.cfg

Dota will recreate the default config.cfg on next launch.

8. Conflict with third-party software

If you use cheats or modifications:

  • Umbrella Loader — update to the latest version. After Valve patches Dota won't launch until Umbrella's update ships (usually 6–18 hours). See the SLA in Pricing.
  • AutoHotkey scripts — unload them from memory. AHK conflicts with Steam Overlay.
  • FPS programs (MSI Afterburner, RTSS) — disable the overlay in settings.
  • Discord overlay — turn it off in Settings → Game Activity.

If you use Umbrella, always launch Dota through the Loader, not directly through Steam.

9. Steam / network

  • Check Steam status — steamstat.us.
  • Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache.
  • Switch the Steam Library Region (Settings → Downloads → Download Region) to the nearest available one.
  • Restart your router / disable VPN.

10. Opt out of the beta channel

Steam → right-click Dota 2 → Properties → Betas → select "None". Beta builds are often unstable on lower-end systems.

11. Second monitor / VR

Disconnect the second monitor and any VR devices before launching. SteamVR aggressively captures the render context.

12. Full reinstall

If nothing helped:

  1. Uninstall Dota 2 via Steam.
  2. Delete the leftover folder ...\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\.
  3. Clear the Steam download cache.
  4. Reinstall. ~50 GB, 30–60 minutes.

If reinstalling didn't help — contact Steam Support through the client.

FAQ

Dota won't launch after an update — what to do?

Wait 30 minutes and try again. After major patches the Steam servers are overloaded. If you use Umbrella — wait for the cheat update (6–18 hours).

Black screen on first launch — is that normal?

The first launch compiles shaders — this can produce a black screen for up to 10 minutes. If it takes longer — switch DX11 / Vulkan via launch options.

VAC mismatch when joining a match — is this a ban?

No. This is a file-integrity error. Verify integrity and restart Steam. A ban looks different — the matchmaking search is refused with a message about a block.

The game launches but crashes in the menu — what to do?

Delete ...\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg\autoexec.cfg and rebuild your settings. Update the video driver. Launch in DX11 via -dx11.
