System Cleanup After an HWID Ban

The complete Windows cleanup protocol before logging into a new Steam account after an HWID block. Twelve steps from deleting registry keys to changing your MAC address and BIOS serial. The end result is a clean hardware profile, unlinked from the old ban.

0. Preparation for cleanup

What you need before starting:

  • A fresh copy of Windows (optional but recommended).
  • A bootable USB drive with Rufus + a Windows 11 ISO.
  • An archiver to back up important data.
  • A written list of passwords or a manager (KeePass / Bitwarden).
  • 2–3 hours of free time.

1. Back up what matters

Save to an external drive:

  • Documents from %USERPROFILE%\Documents\ and the Desktop.
  • Game saves from %APPDATA%\.
  • Browser bookmarks (export to HTML).
  • Passwords — export from your password manager.
  • Software licences (Office, Adobe, antivirus).

Registry cleanup is irreversible. Without a backup you can lose application settings.

2. Fully remove Steam

  1. Steam → Settings → Account → Sign out → Sign out everywhere.
  2. Uninstall Steam via Control Panel → Programs.
  3. Delete the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\ entirely.
  4. Clear %LOCALAPPDATA%\Steam\, %APPDATA%\Steam\.
  5. Delete %PROGRAMDATA%\Steam\ (a hidden folder — enable "show hidden items" first).
  6. Reboot.

3. Registry cleanup of Steam branches

Run regedit as administrator. Delete the following branches:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\ — the entire key.
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\ — the entire key.
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Valve\ — for 64-bit systems.
  • HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Valve\.

Before deleting each branch, export it (right-click → Export) as a rollback option.

4. Change MachineGuid

This is Windows's main identifier. Many anti-cheat systems link bans to it:

  1. Open regedit → HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\.
  2. The value MachineGuid is your unique ID.
  3. Replace it with a new GUID (generate one via powershell: [guid]::NewGuid()).
  4. Apply → reboot.

After changing MachineGuid, some Office and Adobe licences may request re-activation. This is normal.

5. Change the MAC address

The network adapter MAC is the second key parameter. Ways to change it:

  • Via Device Manager: Network Adapter → Properties → Advanced → Network Address → enter a new MAC of 12 hex characters.
  • Via a utility: Technitium MAC Address Changer, NoVirusThanks MAC Address Changer.
  • Radically: buy a USB Ethernet adapter — it has its own physical MAC.

Wi-Fi and Ethernet are separate network adapters — change both.

6. SMBIOS motherboard serial

Changing this programmatically is difficult — it is a firmware-level operation. Options:

  • Via Umbrella Spoofer — built-in SMBIOS substitution at the driver level.
  • BIOS flash — for experienced users. AMIBCP or AFUWIN utility with DMI table editing.
  • Virtual machine — VMware has its own virtual serials.

In most cases the built-in spoofer solves the problem without manually editing the BIOS.

7. Disk identifiers

The hard drive GUID is also tracked:

  • Secure Erase an SSD via the manufacturer's utility (Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive) — resets the serial.
  • Clean Windows install on a separate drive — the most reliable approach.
  • Smartctl via the smartmontools utility — changes SMART attributes, but not the serial itself.
  • Spoofer substitutes the VolumeId at software level — sufficient for most anti-cheat systems.

8. Antivirus and Windows Defender

Windows Defender is linked to your Microsoft account and Hardware Survey. After cleanup:

  1. Settings → Privacy → Diagnostics → Delete diagnostic data.
  2. Settings → Privacy → Activity history → Clear.
  3. Remove the Microsoft account from Windows: Settings → Accounts → Your info → Sign in with a local account.
  4. Reboot under the local account.

9. Activate the spoofer

The final protection layer before starting a new session:

  1. Install Umbrella Loader.
  2. In the menu → Spoofer → Apply.
  3. The spoofer will substitute at the driver level: MachineGuid, MAC, BIOS UUID, Volume IDs, CPU Brand.
  4. Reboot to apply.
  5. After restart the new IDs are active.

10. Create a new Steam account

  1. Install Steam from the official website (do not use an old installer).
  2. Create an account with a new email (not linked to the old one via recovery data).
  3. Enable Steam Guard via the mobile authenticator.
  4. Launch the free-to-play version of Dota 2.
  5. Wait 24 hours before your first ranked match — Valve checks account "freshness".

11. Verification

  • Launch Dota 2 → find an unranked match → play to the end.
  • If there is no ban notification within 24 hours — the cleanup was successful.
  • Play 2–3 unranked matches before ranked to warm up the account.
  • Do not run the cheat immediately — wait a week with clean play so the account builds "trust factor".

12. Preventing repeat bans

  • Use the spoofer every time you run the cheat.
  • Do not play perfect statistics (90+ LH/10 min at low ranks = a red flag).
  • Do not argue in chat — the most common trigger for manual Valve moderation.
  • Never use cheats on your main account. Only on a smurf.
  • After 3 weeks of active use, switch accounts proactively.

FAQ

How long does a full cleanup take?

2–3 hours at a moderate pace. If done with a Windows reinstall on a new SSD — 5–6 hours including re-downloading Dota 2.

Do I need to replace physical hardware?

In 90% of cases — no. A software substitution via the spoofer is sufficient to bypass detection. If the ban returns after a full cleanup — then a USB Ethernet adapter plus a new SSD for the OS.

Will my purchased games be preserved?

On the old account — yes. But you will not be able to log into the old account without triggering a new HWID detection. If your library has valuable games — try appealing the ban via Steam Support before the cleanup.

How often is a cleanup needed?

Once after a ban. With proper spoofer usage and careful play, a repeat cleanup is not needed for months.
