What exactly Valve checks
The anti-cheat stores a hardware profile of 6–8 parameters:
- Network adapter MAC address (Ethernet and Wi-Fi separately).
- Motherboard UUID (via WMI:
Win32_BaseBoard.SerialNumber). - CPU serial number (part of CPUID data).
- Disk GUID (PNPDeviceID for each SSD/HDD).
- BIOS serial number and system UUID.
- SMBIOS data (Manufacturer, Product Name).
- GPU identifiers (optional).
- Steam Hardware Survey ID — a separate profile.
A good spoofer masks all seven. A basic one — only the MAC and the board UUID. If the ban came back — your spoofer is basic.
Checklist 1 — software
- Update the spoofer. Old versions do not support new SMBIOS parameters from Windows 11 24H2+.
- Check the Steam account — if the ban was linked to a phone number, add a new one.
- Clear the Steam Hardware Survey: Steam → Help → About → Reset survey data (or delete
HW_Survey_*.bininC:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\). - Change the Steam email and password after a ban — Valve links accounts through metadata.
- VPN is a separate step from spoofing. If your IP is on a ban list, you need a new regional server.
Checklist 2 — registry and system files
- Delete the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\MachineGuid→ reboot. - Clear
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\,%APPDATA%\Roaming\Steam\,%PROGRAMDATA%\Steam\. - Delete
Steam\config\config.vdf— it will be recreated on the next launch. - Run
regeditand delete the branchesHKCU\Software\Valve\Steam,HKCU\Software\Valve\Dota 2. - Hide the Wi-Fi SSID and connect to a different network during installation (optional).
Before deleting keys, back up the registry: regedit → File → Export → All. This is insurance in case the system breaks.
Checklist 3 — disk and drivers
- Smartmontools (smartctl) can change the disk GUID — but this is a firmware-level operation, done at your own risk.
- Clean Windows reinstall on a separate drive reliably resets most parameters. For SSDs — better done via the manufacturer's secure-erase utility.
- Drivers: reinstall the network adapter (Device Manager → Network adapters → Uninstall → reboot). The MAC usually updates.
- Steam reinstall with full cleanup — the standard final step.
When hardware replacement is needed
If the ban repeats within 1–3 days after all cleanups — Valve is detecting physical hardware serials. Options:
- Replace the network adapter with a new one (a USB Ethernet adapter also works, costs $10–20).
- Replace the SSD/HDD — the main system drive.
- Replace the motherboard — the most radical step, requires a Windows reinstall.
- Virtual machine (VMware, VirtualBox) — the game inside a VM has fully virtual IDs. But Dota 2 runs poorly in a VM — lag, Vulkan crashes.
The cheapest practical option is a USB Ethernet adapter plus a new SSD for the OS. This solves the problem reliably.
FAQ
Why didn't the spoofer work on the first try?
Most likely your spoofer is basic. It only masks the MAC and UUID. Modern anti-cheat reads 6+ parameters. Use Umbrella Spoofer — it covers the full set.
How many times can you use a spoofer on the same hardware?
Unlimited, but with each iteration Valve gets better at detecting patterns. Better to use one smurf account per masking cycle — do not use cheats on your main account.
Is it cheaper to buy new hardware or wait for the ban to be lifted?
Valve generally does not lift HWID bans. It is cheaper to get a new USB Ethernet adapter and a clean OS on a separate drive.
Where can I buy a spoofer?
Inside the Umbrella package — a built-in module that updates automatically.
