Diagnosis — where the problem is
- Open the Dota console (~ key) → type
net_graph 1. A mini graph of ping and packet loss appears on screen. - If loss% is over 1% — the problem is in the route, not the game.
- If ping jumps from 30 to 200 every 5 seconds — an unstable ISP channel.
- If the ping is steadily high (e.g. 80-90) — a non-optimal server region.
Changing the matchmaking region
Dota 2 has many regional servers: US East, US West, Europe West, Europe East, SE Asia, Australia, South America and others.
- In the main menu → Settings → Options → Search Region.
- Choose a region with a ping under 50 ms. Pick the data center closest to you.
- You can select several regions at once — the system chooses the best one at search time.
Checking the route with a traceroute
Open cmd → type:
tracert valve.net
Look at each hop. If at hop 3-4 the ping jumps from 20 to 100 — it's an ISP problem. If at hop 7-8 — it's a backbone problem (Valve, not you). A ticket with the ISP can speed up the fix.
Fixes by priority
- Restart the router. Helps in 60% of spike cases.
- Change the region to the nearest with a ping < 50 ms.
- Turn off Wi-Fi, switch to a wire. Wi-Fi adds +20-50 ms of unpredictable jitter.
- Close background downloads. Torrents / Steam updates eat bandwidth.
- Change ISP / try an LTE modem as a test.
Bonus with Umbrella
The Umbrella Info Screen module shows enemy positions through the fog — even at 100 ms ping you have time to react, because you see them before everyone else. This compensates for part of the lag problems.

FAQ
Does a VPN help with ping spikes?
Sometimes. A VPN changes the route — if the ISP throttles game traffic, a VPN can route it through a normal channel. Test ExitLag or WTFast.
What is choke in net_graph?
Choke is packets the game couldn't send due to a congested channel. Any choke > 5% = a laggy game for everyone else.
Can you play with 100 ping?
Yes, on support and offlane. On a mid carry (Invoker, Storm) 100 ping noticeably disrupts pre-casts.
