How to bind Armlet for HP abuse

Armlet of Mordiggian is the most confusing item in Dota 2. The active mode gives +25 damage and +475 HP, but drains 40 HP/sec. "Armlet abuse" is the technique of quickly toggling it on and off to catch the HP peak without losing health. We break down how to set the bind manually and how to automate it with Umbrella.

What Armlet abuse is

When Armlet turns on, the hero instantly gains 475 HP. When it turns off — loses 475 HP. If you turn it off before the 40 HP/sec damage tick, you can hold the boost indefinitely without losing HP. The correct timer: ON 0.7 seconds → OFF 0.1 seconds → ON 0.7 seconds, and so on.

This technique works on heroes with a slow right-click attack (Sven, Wraith King, Phantom Assassin, Bristleback, Lifestealer). On Sven, one Armlet press gives +25 damage for the 0.7 sec attack — that's +0.5 of a crit.

Manual bind via Dota 2 settings

Open Settings → Hotkeys → Quick Cast. Assign Armlet to a comfortable key (usually Shift+F). In Quick Cast mode a press activates the item without a cursor.

  1. Turn Armlet on 1.5 seconds before the attack (the HP rises to its peak during that time).
  2. Press attack — Sven Storm Hammer / PA Coup de Grace / Bristleback Warpath trigger with +25 damage.
  3. Right after the attack, turn Armlet off (tap the same bind).
  4. Wait 0.3 sec so HP doesn't fall below the starting value — turn it on again.

The difficulty is in the timing. Without 200+ practice games of experience, manual Armlet abuse isn't consistent.

With Umbrella — automatic

The Item Auto-Use module in Umbrella automates the abuse. Setup takes 30 seconds:

  1. Open Item Auto-Use → select Armlet of Mordiggian.
  2. Enable "Toggle on attack" mode — the bind triggers on every attack.
  3. Set a 0.1 sec delay on the toggle-off.

From there Umbrella holds the perfect timer itself. On Sven the abuse-build win rate rises from 49% to 53% by the statistics of the extra DPS.

The dangers of abuse

If you mess up the timing, Armlet removes 475 HP instantly — a death in any fight. Without a script the risk grows in proportion to stress. Some pro players (Topson, Miracle) use Armlet abuse only in solo pick-offs; in fights they prefer to keep it off.

With Umbrella the risk is neutralized — the script never gets the timing wrong. This is statistically safer than manual abuse in 100% of cases.

FAQ

Can you bind Armlet to the mouse wheel?

Yes, but it's not recommended. The mouse wheel scrolls accidentally easily, which leads to turning Armlet on at the wrong moment.

Does the abuse work on Lifestealer?

Yes, but not as effectively. Lifestealer heals through attacks, so it needs Armlet less. There's a good effect only with an Echo Sabre + Armlet build.

Is the abuse script safe?

Item Auto-Use is a client-side script that sends no data to the Valve server. In risk level it's comparable to a custom HUD. Details — in the breakdown "Do you get banned for cheats".
