Hidden MMR in Dota 2

Visible MMR is the number in your profile. Hidden MMR is what matchmaking actually uses to pick opponents, unranked games included. They do not match, which is exactly why a medal can say one thing while the games feel like a different division.

What the number is

Matchmaking rates player strength continuously, not only in ranked games. That internal rating is the hidden MMR: it updates after every match and reflects actual results rather than your medal.

  • It works in unranked too. Which is why normal matchmaking is not random.
  • It moves faster than the visible number. A win streak shifts the internal rating before the medal catches up.
  • It is not shown anywhere. Valve does not expose it in the profile or after a match.

How it differs from visible MMR

Visible MMR accumulates through ranked matches in fixed steps. The hidden rating lives its own life and reacts to your play directly. Hence the familiar situations:

  • A low medal against opponents who clearly play better — the internal rating sits above the medal.
  • The first games after a long break feel heavy — the system is re-estimating.
  • A fresh account already meets decent opponents before calibration — hidden MMR has formed already.

How to check it

The honest answer: there is no official way. Valve neither publishes the number nor exposes it through the API, so any service promising your "exact hidden MMR" is in fact estimating it from match history, opponents and results.

  • Look at your lobbies. The average medal in the match is the most honest signal available.
  • Watch the trend. The direction matters more than a number: are opponents getting stronger or weaker.
  • Use a tracker. The MMR tracker module in Umbrella shows a hidden-rating estimate and the real gain per match.

What not to do is pay for "exact hidden MMR". Nobody can sell a number that is not publicly available.

Hidden MMR and calibration

Calibration does not start from zero. By the time you play your first ranked game the system already has a picture of your level from previous matches, so the outcome is largely decided by how you played before it.

The practical takeaway: to calibrate higher, play at full strength before the calibration games, not only during them. If the starting step matters, there are accounts with an open rank.

FAQ

How do you see hidden MMR in Dota 2?

There is no official way — Valve shows the number neither in the client nor through the API. Third-party trackers estimate it from match history and opponents rather than reading an exact value.

How is hidden MMR different from normal MMR?

Visible MMR is the accumulated result of ranked games and moves in fixed steps. The hidden rating updates after every match, unranked included, and it is what drives matchmaking.

Does hidden MMR affect calibration?

Directly. By the time calibration starts the system has already rated your level from previous games, so the result largely depends on how you played before it.

Can you lower hidden MMR on purpose?

It does drop with losses, but there is nothing to gain: match quality drops with it, and deliberate feeding leads to reports, low priority and a damaged behaviour score.
