Two types of wards
- Observer ward — grants 1600-unit vision around it, lasts 6 minutes. Free 2 units at round start + 1 every 1:30.
- Sentry ward — detects invisible units and enemy wards within 850 range. Costs 75 gold, lasts 7 minutes.
- Glyph — a 5-second shield for a tower + reveals invisible units within 800 range. Individual cooldown of 5 minutes per tower.
Early game (0:00–10:00)
The main goal is to secure your carry's lane and control the Bounty/Wisdom rune.
- 0:00 at the top rune — vision for Radiant offlane / Dire safe lane.
- 0:00 at the bottom rune — symmetrically for the other side.
- 1:30 — deep ward in the triangle between the enemy jungle and the runes. Provides rotation info.
- 5:00 — pull spot vision so the enemy pos-5 cannot stack the jungle.
- Sentry on the lane when the enemy has Bounty Hunter, Riki, or Treant Protector — removes invisibility.
Midgame (10:00–25:00)
Focus shifts to controlling the jungle and Power Runes (every 2 minutes from minute 6).
- Treeline push zone — behind the enemy's Tier-1 tower to see gank rotations.
- Above the Roshan Pit — on the hill near Roshan, reveals any kill attempts.
- Power Runes — both spots (top and bot). Control = faster farming.
- Smoke detection — sentries at checkpoints between the front and lanes.
Late game and Roshan
After minute 25 the priority is case-wards for Aegis and Aghanim's Blessing.
- Roshan spot — two wards on the far approaches, not on the pit itself (too obvious).
- Aegis tracking — after killing Roshan place vision on the retreat route to track the Aegis carrier.
- Barracks control — vision behind the enemy's Tier-3 to see respawns.
- Smoke prep — sentry on the expected initiation path.
Clearing enemy wards
Dewarding gives +150 gold and removes the enemy's vision advantage. Where to look for enemy vision:
- High ground (cliff) above Tier-1 towers.
- Both Roshan approaches.
- Power Rune spots (river).
- Trees above jungle camp spots.
Do not carry sentries in your inventory all game — it costs you an item slot. Buy and place them immediately, or hand them to the carry for dewarding.
Maphack vs wards
Info Screen (maphack) from Umbrella provides vision across the entire map through the fog of war — no wards needed. As a support this changes the logic:
- Frees 75 gold × 4 sentries per minute for other items (Glimmer Cape, Force Staff).
- You see enemy wards without spending sentries — deward any of them freely.
- No need to roam the map placing vision — sit comfortably on the lane.
- Smoke gank coordination is more precise — you know exactly where to go.
Downside: your team does not see the vision you have. You need to ping or still place wards for allies. With the Combo Builder binding pings to a key solves this.
FAQ
How many wards in inventory is optimal for pos-5?
2 observers + 2 sentries. More than that takes up slots needed for Wand, Tranquil Boots, Glimmer Cape. If the enemy picked multiple invisible heroes — 4 sentries for 5 minutes.
Can you place wards in the enemy jungle?
Yes, and you should. Vision in the enemy jungle = knowledge of their rotations. Best time — after the enemy dies (they will be gone for 30+ seconds).
When should you use Glyph?
Primarily to save a Tier-1 tower. To reveal an invisible hero (Riki under a tower) — more rarely; usually a sentry is better.
What if enemies are finding my wards through maphack?
Change your positions, do not use standard spots. Try deep-warding (enemy jungle). And know that Umbrella maphack is common in Dota 2 — play assuming some enemies can see everything.
