How to change the language
- Open Steam → Library → right click Dota 2 → Properties.
- Go to the Language tab.
- Choose your language from the dropdown.
- Close the window — Steam automatically downloads the localization (~ 500 MB).
- Launch Dota — the interface and voice-over are now in your language.
If the language doesn't change right away — restart Steam. Sometimes a file integrity check is needed (Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity).
Voice-over vs subtitles
The Dota 2 voice-over in localized languages is official, done by Valve. The quality is mixed: some heroes are voiced excellently, others more weakly.
If you want a mixed mode (English voice-over + localized subtitles):
- Steam → Properties → Language → English.
- In game: Settings → Audio → Show subtitles in your language.
Typing in chat
Non-Latin input in Dota 2 chat works by default. If your characters don't type:
- Check the keyboard layout (Alt+Shift / Win+Space).
- In Steam → Settings → In-Game → turn off the Steam overlay shortcut on Shift+Tab (it conflicts with switching).
- If nothing helps — reinstall the Dota fonts via Verify Integrity.
Commentator localization
Dota 2 has custom commentator packs (Bruno, ODPixel and others). All are available only in English. If you want commentary in another language — watch streams from regional broadcasters.
Want to change a look along with a localized voice? The Umbrella Skin Changer doesn't change the voice-over — that requires a real purchase through Steam.
FAQ
Can you play in one language but type to enemies in English?
Yes. The client language doesn't affect chat. Just switch the layout before typing.
Are there localization problems?
Sometimes new heroes (Karri in 7.39) are in English for the first 2-3 weeks — Valve translates later. This is normal.
Does the HUD change with the language?
Only the text. Icons and fonts stay standard. If you want a full interface rebrand — look at HUD mods in the Workshop.
