How long it takes to rank up MMR in Dota 2

Ranking up in Dota 2 is a marathon. Each rank takes from 100 to 800 hours of pure play. We break it down by segment: how many hours, what win rate you need, what slows you down.

The MMR system structure

  • Herald (1-770 MMR) — the starting rank for newcomers. 0-300 hours of experience.
  • Guardian (770-1540) — learning basic last hits and positioning.
  • Crusader (1540-2310) — understanding roles, starting to use guides and copy pro builds.
  • Archon (2310-3080) — steady farm, basic combos.
  • Legend (3080-3850) — deep matchup knowledge, the start of tryharding.
  • Ancient (3850-4620) — pro skill begins here.
  • Divine (4620-5420) — the top 2% of players in the world.
  • Immortal (5420+) — the top 0.1%, the leaderboard.

Real hours by segment

At an average win rate of 53% (above half — a rank up):

  • Herald → Crusader: ~150 h of active practice / 300-400 games.
  • Crusader → Archon: ~250 h of practice / 500 games.
  • Archon → Legend: ~400 h / 700 games.
  • Legend → Ancient: ~600 h / 1000 games.
  • Ancient → Divine: ~800 h / 1300 games.
  • Divine → Immortal: ~1200 h / 2000 games.

So from zero to Divine — about 2400 h of pure gameplay. That's two years of a daily 3-4 hour grind.

What slows growth

  1. Playing different positions. A specialized player (only pos 1 or only 5) grows twice as fast.
  2. Tilt. After 2 losses in a row, the win rate of the next games drops by 10%.
  3. Playing in a party with low MMR. Party calibrated MMR = the group's average MMR.
  4. Old builds. The meta changes every 2-3 months — old builds give -3% win rate.

How to speed up growth

  • Play 1 hero for at least 50 games in a row (master one character).
  • Watch pro replays — learn pick-offs and item timings.
  • Use Last-Hit Helper to stabilize farm — adds 50-100 GPM.
  • Enable Info Screen to prevent ganks.
  • Ready configs for your main hero — CFG.

FAQ

Can you raise MMR in a week?

Realistically — by 200-300 MMR with 6 hours of daily playtime and a 55%+ win rate. More — risks burnout.

What is Boost?

Boost is a service where another player raises your MMR for you. Prohibited by Valve rules. The ban risk is high, especially with a sudden rank jump.

Does Umbrella help with gains?

Yes, statistically +2-4% win rate from Item Auto-Use and Dodger. Over time that's +1-2 ranks per year.
